| Lunch and Reception at the Crystal Palace | ||
| Well, another Trash Bash has come and gone and as Chair of the Trash Bash Committee, I have a lot of mixed emotions. I am very proud of all the volunteers that came out and cleaned up litter. I am extremely thankful for the help we received from our sponsors and committee members. But I am sad that littering is still a problem in Prince Edward County. It is encouraging that most groups that clean up the same stretch year after year are reporting less garbage. However, I would have thought that after 11 years of Trash Bashing that all the litter bugs would be shamed into changing their disgusting habit. During the Trash Bash reception at the Crystal Palace, I neglected to thank the committee members. Leo Finnegan, who is the Chair of the Prince Edward Round Table on Environment and Economy was the person that first suggested 11 years ago that the roads should be cleaned up. Judy Paulhus organizes our website www.trashbash.ca and is a key fundraiser for the Trash Bash. George Underhill, Chuck Slik, Danya Slik, Lex Brusse, Dick Potter, Dale Duetta, Ian Balsillie and Corrie Isenor are also important members of the organizing committee. | Our sponsors are
so important to the success of Trash Bash. They include Essroc Cement,
Isaiah Tubbs Resort, Quinte Conservation, Canadian Waste Services, Tim
Horton’s Picton, Trenton Rotary, Trenton Independent Grocer, LARP
Consulting, Maunco Sanitation and Safety Supplies, McDonald’s
Restaurant Picton, Picton Rotary, NetReach International, Kelly Sexsmith
R.M.T., and Cappeli Hair Salon.
The grand total this year was 162 groups (870 people) cleaning 523 kilometres. That is up from last years 153 groups cleaning 511 kilometres. We have set a new record each and every year of the Trash Bash. As well, Quinte West has started a Trash Bash and they had their second annual event this year. Kingston now does a big clean up and a group of young people in Pennsylvania saw our web site and were going to start a Trash Bash in their area. I have some final thoughts on Trash Bash. Our goal has always been to clean up the County and to raise awareness of the littering issue. |
I believe that we
are succeeding in both goals. It is encouraging the Trash Bash has grown
every year and that it is starting to spread to other areas. It is also
nice to hear groups reporting less litter.
However, I believe that there should be a joint National, Provincial and local campaign involving governments, corporations and environmental groups to really do something about littering. Advertising, public service announcements, signage, school programs, roadside litter receptacles, enforcement of fines, deposits on all drink containers and bottles are all things that could help. It is not impossible to solve the problem of littering but it needs coordination and a comprehensive approach. We have made a good start in Prince Edward County. Thank you and keep on Trash Bashing!
